The GNWT's Common Approach to Public Engagement

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has publicly launched a common approach to public engagement. Central to the approach is an Employee Guide to support a common and consistent approach to public engagement planning, implementation and reporting across all departments.

What is Public Engagement?

Public engagement is a good governance practice that provides opportunities for partners, stakeholders, and the general public to provide input and feedback on government decisions.

Why is Public Engagement important?

The GNWT recognizes the importance of engaging our residents on a wide range of important public policy issues. Feedback obtained through public engagement is one of the factors that can contribute to the development and improvement of government programs and services and decision-making.

The GNWT understands that how a decision is made is just as important as the outcome of the decision itself. The public is more connected, educated and informed than ever before, and they increasingly expect to participate in the decision-making process. When the public is engaged, government can utilize their expertise to make better quality decisions in which residents have a high level of confidence.

How does the GNWT engage with the public?

The GNWT regularly undertakes public engagement across the territory to engage with partners, stakeholders and all residents on important initiatives.

Public engagement can take many different forms—from an online survey, to a series of public meetings, and other information-gathering activities. The GNWT is committed to public engagement practices that support effective decision-making and has developed a series of guiding principles, a step-by-step planning guide, and a common online approach for public engagement that reflect this commitment. This approach will support all GNWT departments in planning and implementing public engagement activities in a way that promotes consistency across the GNWT, strengthens relationships, demonstrates respect, builds trust and models the principles of openness, transparency and accountability.
