Apprenticeship, Trade and Occupation Certification Board

Function

The Apprenticeship, Trade and Occupation Certification Board reviews appeals and provides advice to the Minister of Education, Culture and Employment on matters pertaining to apprenticeship, skilled trades, and occupation certification.

Board Composition

The Board consists of seven members as follows:

  • Two or three members representing the interests of employers;
  • Two or three members representing the interests of employees;
  • One or three members who have expertise that would contribute to the operation of the Board and represent the interests of the general public.

The number of members representing the interests of employers and employees must be equal.

Alternate Members

There are no alternate members.

The legislation does not provide for the appointment of alternates to the Board.

Chairperson

A Chairperson is designated by the Minister of Education, Culture and Employment from amongst the Board members.

Vice-Chairperson

There is no Vice-Chairperson.

Quorum

The Act is silent on quorum.

Appointment Instrument

Members are appointed by the Minister of Education, Culture and Employment under section 6(1) of the Apprenticeship, Trade and Occupation Certification Act.

Term Duration

A member holds office for a term, not exceeding three years, specified in the appointment.

Time and Travel Requirements

The Board shall hold at least one meeting per year, with a maximum of six meetings.

Remuneration

Members shall receive remuneration according to Executive Council classification and Financial Management Board Secretariat directives.

Category - Advisory

Chairperson - up to $300 per day

Member - up to $250 per day

Chair and members - 50% per half-day (i.e., 3.5 hours or less), for work on board business for each day of meetings

Other Considerations

Members should have experience or knowledge in a designated trade or occupation.
