The GNWT is committed to providing culturally respectful, trauma-informed and recovery-oriented services within the health and social services system. Integrated approaches to wellness, social supports, health education and public awareness are needed to address the root causes of poor health outcomes, and assist vulnerable populations, including seniors, Elders, persons with disabilities, and at-risk youth.
The GNWT will focus on increasing access to healthcare and addressing systemic inequities and inefficiencies. Virtual care options may help meet health program delivery needs, improve continuity of care, and manage the ongoing health human resource crisis. To strengthen preventative measures, public awareness and improve access to trauma-informed, culturally appropriate health care, the GNWT will:
- Deliver equitable access to sustainable primary care in all NWT communities;
- Focus on health promotion and preventative care, and disease prevention across all age groups;
- Train and support Indigenous and local residents to pursue careers in the health professions, while also recruiting and retaining qualified health and social services professionals to the NWT;
- Improve medical travel and out-of-territory care, with a focus on clinical coordination and cultural safety.
