Open Information

The Open Government Policy defines Open Information as:

Open Informationgovernment-held information, including but not limited to information regarding government programs, activities, publications and spending, which is released proactively and made available to the public through a variety of means and in formats that are accessible and user-friendly, with minimal or no restrictions on use or reuse, excluding that which is considered sensitive or subject to privacy, security or legal restrictions.

Ensuring that information about government policies, activities, initiatives, spending, and programs and services is available and accessible to the public is an important step toward increasing government openness, transparency and accountability. The goal of Open Information is to make government information easy to find, use and understand for all NWT residents.

The GNWT maintains and communicates information in a number of different ways and locations on the web. Through the Open Government Policy, we are working in conjunction with the Service Innovation Strategy, the review of the ATIPP Act, the Communications Transformation and other related initiatives to improve the way government is shared to make it more accessible for everyone.

The Open Government Policy provides for the development of directives and guidelines that will provide guidance to departments around:

  • categories of data and information that should be made available to the public;
  • processes to guide departments to identify, assess, and prioritize data and information for publication;
  • principles of data governance to ensure the quality of data, including data ownership and stewardship;
  • establishment of a central open data and information portal including links and contextual information for government datasets; and
  • processes for engaging with the public to solicit feedback on whether the data and information provided are relevant and useful, and for addressing issues related to the central portal.
