Healthcare costs are rising, and resources are limited. The GNWT cannot continue expanding services indefinitely. The Healthcare System Sustainability Unit was created to identify essential health and social services, ensuring they are delivered in a way that is both financially responsible and effective for residents.
The Unit operates within the Department of Executive and Indigenous Affairs to ensure a whole-of-government approach, better oversight and accountability, and reflects the Premier’s commitment to system-wide sustainability
The Healthcare System Sustainability Unit works with the Department of Health and Social Services and Health and Social Services Authorities to:
- review core health and social services, including insured services;
- identify financial and operational improvements; and
- ensure services are delivered efficiently while maintaining high-quality care.
Funding
The Healthcare System Sustainability Unit is fully funded through the Territorial Health Investment Fund, a federal agreement that provides $2 million annually until March 2028. The funding supports nine positions and operational costs related to engagement and communication.
