Will the NWT be ready for legal cannabis?

The federal Cannabis Act will come into force on October 17, 2018, and the Government of the Northwest Territories is committed to meeting this deadline.
The affected departments developed legislation for the NWT and the Bill received assent in the Legislative Assembly on June 1, 2018.

GNWT departments with responsibilities relating to cannabis are working to ensure that public education campaigns, programs, policies and regulations are developed and put into place before legalization day on October 17, 2018.

When will we know the official rules on cannabis use and possession?

With the passing of Bill 6, the Cannabis Legalization and Regulation Implementation Act, the legislation is finalized, and regulations are being developed. The GNWT will be reaching out to the public over the coming months to provide an overview of what the legislation and the regulations mean for cannabis legalization in the NWT.
