The Honourable Caroline Wawzonek is the Minister Responsible for the Status of Women. The Minister Responsible for the Status of Women is leading the work to address gender disparity throughout the Northwest Territories and supports equal opportunity for people of all genders.
The GNWT established the Gender Equity Division to expand on the work of the Women's Advisory Office. The newly created Gender Equity Division is responsible for:
- advancing gender equality issues,
- ending violence against women and girls, including family violence prevention,
- enhancing women’s voices in decision-making,
- and promoting women's economic empowerment.
This ensures that gender equality issues are taken into consideration during government decision-making. The Gender Equity Division partners with community organizations and other government departments to promote gender equity.
