Strengthen the government’s leadership and authority on climate change

Climate change is a significant challenge facing NWT residents and requires meaningful action and leadership.

This work will be led by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in collaboration with the Department of Infrastructure, the Department of Executive and Indigenous Affairs, and with additional support from all Departments.

What we will do

1. Implement the 2030 NWT Climate Change Strategic Framework and 2030 Energy Strategy

2. Improve coordination and communication around climate change

3. Work with national and international organizations to advocate for the consideration of the unique NWT and northern perspectives on climate change impacts, adaptation and mitigation

How we will do it

1.a. Carry out the Action Plans established under these strategies

2.a. Establish the Northwest Territories Climate Change Council to include Indigenous governments and organizations, community governments, and other external partners

3.a. Work with territorial and Indigenous govenrment partners to advocate for NWT and northern perspectives at national and international organizations and forums

3.b. Work with Nunavut and Yukon to develop a joint statement on climate change and the North

How we will demonstrate progress

1.a. Actions are completed and monitored (through 2030)

2.a. Terms of Reference are developed and the Northwest Territories Climate Change Council is established (Fall 2020)

3.a. Recommendations provided to national and international organizations to guide their work

3.b. Joint statement is issued
