Tourism

As a tourist, are there special rules I need to be aware of?

Tourists are subject to the same personal possession limits, public use limitations, and parks rules as NWT residents.

Tourists are expected to obey all signage prohibiting use in any area, and to be aware of, and adhere to, all applicable laws of a jurisdiction, including local bylaws. This includes being aware of legislation related to cannabis use. When travelling to the NWT from other provinces or territories, tourists may not carry more than the legal personal limit of 30 grams established by the federal Cannabis Act.

Are there opportunities for cannabis tourism?

Tourism operators are not permitted to include cannabis offerings as part of any tour package. If cannabis is brought on site, tourism operators will need to follow the rules set out under the legislation and regulations pertaining to cannabis or substance use, including workplace use restrictions and driving restrictions.

Tourists are expected to follow all laws related to cannabis while on tours, or anywhere in the NWT. When travelling to the NWT from other provinces or territories, tourists may not carry more than the legal personal limit of 30 grams established by the federal Cannabis Act.

Can I smoke cannabis in territorial parks?

Territorial parks users will be subject to rules similar to those currently in place for smoking cigarettes. Cannabis will not be allowed to be used in or around a building, structure or facility, whether covered by a roof or not, and any place within 30 metres of playgrounds and sports fields (such as volleyball courts, and horseshoe pitches).

Cannabis may be used within designated campsites. Smoking cannabis will be allowed on trails, roads (while not operating or riding in a motor vehicle), and in parks when not in use for a public event.
